I know what it feels like to struggle in wildlife careers because I’ve been where you are!

After graduate school, I struggled to land a permanent job despite having a Ph.D., numerous publications, over a decade of experience, and a large network with top scientists from prestigious organizations. For the past eight years, I’ve been obsessed with understanding what it takes to get a permanent job in this competitive field by analyzing my own career path and talking with hundreds of struggling aspiring wildlife job seekers.

My experience at a glance:

  • A B.A., 3 internships, a Ph.D., 2 postdocs

  • 17 years of total research in the government, zoos, museums, academia, and alongside nonprofits

  • ~30 peer-reviewed scientific publications (under last name Schuttler) in animal behavior, mammal communities, predator-prey relationships, non-invasive genetics, satellite telemetry, social science, and citizen science

  • Study species and systems across four continents

  • 6 years of mentoring students and implementing my 3 part framework
